Case Study 4: Custom 13-in-1 Thunderbolt 4 Docking Station for a IT Service Provider
Client Background
Our client is a leading European IT service provider headquartered in Munich, Germany, serving over 2,000 mid-sized enterprises with IT infrastructure hosting and managed desktop services. As enterprise demand for workstation expansion grew, the client wanted to launch a full-featured, stable Thunderbolt 4 docking station as the core component of their “Standardized Enterprise Office Bundle,” replacing the mix of off-brand docks and adapters previously used.
The Challenge
Typical enterprise users (financial analysts, administrative staff, software developers) required the following from a docking station:
Multi-display expansion & compatibility: Simultaneous connection of two monitors (one 4K@60Hz for primary work, one 1080P) with stable performance on both Windows and macOS – no black screens during switching.
Rich and practical port set: Enterprise offices need simultaneous wired network, keyboard/mouse, USB drives, SD cards, and headphones. The dock required gigabit Ethernet, multiple USB-A (both high-speed and 2.0), SD/TF card slot, and audio jack.
Stable laptop charging: Mainstream laptops (MacBook Pro, Dell Latitude, Lenovo ThinkPad) need at least 85W PD charging to stay powered through a full workday.
Enterprise-scale deployment: The client planned 5,000 units in the first year, requiring CE/UKCA/FCC certifications plus a silent firmware upgrade tool.
Tight delivery timeline: Only 9 weeks from project kickoff to initial mass production.
Our Solution
Rocketek delivered a 13-in-1 full-featured Thunderbolt 4 docking station based on the client‘s specifications:
Multi-display: HDMI supports 4K@60Hz, DisplayPort supports up to 8K@30Hz, and the downstream Thunderbolt 4 port supports daisy-chaining. Firmware auto-detects the OS – MST for Windows, SST for macOS – ensuring stable dual-display output.
Full port configuration: Thunderbolt 4 upstream (85W PD), Thunderbolt 4 downstream, HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C Gen2 (10Gbps), USB-A Gen2 (10Gbps), two USB-A 2.0 ports, gigabit Ethernet, SD/TF card slot (5Gbps), 3.5mm audio jack, and a power switch. The 140W DC supply ensures stable operation under full load.
Enterprise features: Silent firmware upgrade tools for Windows and macOS, integrable with Intune or Jamf Pro. Completed CE, UKCA, and FCC certifications.
Agile delivery: Week 4 – engineering prototypes; Week 7 – compatibility testing and certifications completed; Week 9 – initial mass production of 3,000 units; Week 12 – remaining 2,000 units delivered.
The Result
Within six months of launch, the client‘s initial batch of 5,000 units was fully distributed to their enterprise customers across finance, legal, and technology sectors. IT departments reported a 58% reduction in peripheral-related support tickets after deployment.
Users highly praised the convenience of “single-cable connection to everything,” making the dock one of the highest-renewal accessories in the client’s office standardization bundle.
Based on the success of this project, the client placed a follow-on order for another 5,000 units and signed a two-year exclusive supply agreement with Rocketek.
This case demonstrates Rocketek‘s proven capability in delivering enterprise-grade, full-featured Thunderbolt 4 docking stations – comprehensive ports, rock-solid stability, plug-and-play simplicity – perfectly suited for standardized office environments.
